OSMOND — Osmond Public Library has received a matching funds grant through the Pilcrow Foundation Children's Book Project, for children’s books. The matching funds were donated by Marvin Kumm in memory of Cindy Kumm.
The Pilcrow Foundation provides new, quality, hardcover children's books to rural public libraries across the United States.
The foundation's mission statement reads, “We know that reading to and with children every day and providing them with frequent opportunities to read on their own are important activities for literacy development. Literacy is the greatest gift we can give to our children; the public library is where we can start.”
Osmond library director LaVail Aschoff stated, “It is a very generous grant. With the two times matching funds we ended up with 114 hardbound books!” Mrs. Aschoff explained, “The grant was a two-times matching funds. Our (Marv) matching funds could be up to $400. So that means we have $400, the Pilcrow Foundation matched that times 2. So for the $400 donation from Marv, Pilcrow gave $800. So we got $1,200 worth of books per the grant guidelines.”
The $1,200 purchased 74 books but, in addition, the Osmond library received additional books purchased through donor-sponsored programs through the Pilcrow Foundation.
The first program provided 22 math and science books, and the second provided 18 books related to health and wellness.
The Kumms' donation also included an amount to be used toward a bookshelf with a bookplate showing that it was donated by the Cindy Kumm family and the Pilcrow Foundation.
