OSMOND — Osmond was the host last Saturday, July 27, for a youth football camp featuring none other than Nebraska Cornhusker football players.
Set up by youth football coach Justin Koehler, the camp was led by Christian Jones, the No. 1 college football recruit in Nebraska for the Class of 2025, and a top ESPN 100 recruit.
In addition to Christian Jones, Nebraska Cornhusker football players in attendance were Elliott Brown, Grant Buddha, Camden Witucki, Thomas Spears and Landon Sobota.
Koehler explained that, a few weeks ago Christian had reached out to him, asking if he could help put a youth football camp together. The two texted back and forth quite a bit with different ideas.
They had to rush picking a date, he said, that worked for Husker players to make it, along with Christian’s football schedule.
Koehler thanked Jeff Luhr for helping with making a flyer to post on social media, Mike Slagle for getting T-shirts made up in short time, Dwight Kahny and Brad Wright with helping get the field ready and football equipment needed for camp.
“The camp went great!” Koehler said. “Weather was favorable, boys came from surrounding towns, and left with a smile and sore legs! Christian and the other players did a very good job running the camp. Many parents reached out and said how impressed they were! I’m looking forward to getting a date set on the calendar earlier for next year for parents to plan for! I’m just super proud of our town of Osmond and of Christian! These boys need good role models and players to look up to, and he definitely fits the bill!" Christian is the son of Dave Jones and Lisa Hoffman Jones, both 1993 Osmond High School graduates. He is a senior playing football at Omaha Westside and has received many offers from major D1 colleges to play football.
Dave commented, “I’m very grateful to watch my son do a football camp where I played high school football.”
Approximately 55 youth, in grades 1-8, from 10 different towns attended the football camp. Each received a T-shirt and mouthpiece. They worked in four different stations, learning skills such as stance, footwork, taking snaps, hand-offs, catching drills, tackling, rushing, etc.
They also had fastest man and knockout contests. At the end of the day, they received autographs from the Cornhuskers.
Christian’s grandparents are Dr. David and Sandy Jones and Dennis Hoffman, all of Osmond, and the late Marilyn Hoffman.
