Join the Club!
The Osmond Public Library currently has three different clubs for those who enjoy reading, cooking, and having fun!
Cookbook Club
At the cookbook club we pick one cookbook a month. The cookbook is on display at the library. Stop in to pick a recipe, and then bring the recipe from the book to share on the night of the club. Message us to send you a recipe if you can’t make it in before the meeting.
We talk about what we like and dislike about the recipes. It is open to anyone who would like to bring a recipe from the chosen book.
The club meets at 6 p.m. on the first Monday of each month, with the fol lowing upcoming dates: May 5, June 2, July 7 and Aug. 4. For the May 5 meeting, the chosen cookbook is “The Everything Mexican Cookbook” by Margaret Kaeter.
Hartington-Wausa-Osmond Board Game Club
The board game club has a great mix of games and is led by Peter Talley from Hartington. All ages are welcome — children/tweens/teens must be able to follow the game rules and be respectful of the other players and games.
It includes collaborative and competitive board games and role playing. There are special events, tournaments and contests.
This club meets from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month. Upcoming dates are May 1, June 5 and July 3.
Book Club
The Osmond Book Club has been around for a number of years. There are currently 11 members of the club, and anyone is welcome to join.
Once a year, members of the club submit names of books to form a list with a wide range of genres. Each month, we discuss a book and there are usually questions from the book itself that we answer and discuss.
The club meets at 5:30 p.m. once a month, usually the last Wednesday of the month, depending on when the day falls and if there are any holidays. For April, since there are five weeks, the club will meet on the fourth Wednesday, April 23.
The book for this month is “The Island of Sea Women,” by Lisa See. This is an historical novel about Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls living on the Korean island of Jeju, best friends who come from very different backgrounds. When they are old enough, they begin working in the sea with their village’s all-female diving collective, led by Young-sook’s mother. As the girls take up their positions as baby divers, they know they are beginning a life of excitement and responsibility — but also danger. Despite their love for each other, Mi-ja and Young-sook find it impossible to ignore their differences.
“The Island of Sea Women” takes place over many decades, beginning during a period of Japanese colonialism in the 1930s and 1940s, followed by World War II, the Korean War, through the era of cell phones and wet suits for the women divers.
Check in at the library to pick up a book. If there are no copies available, just ask the librarian and she'll find out if one of the members is done with the book. They can also sometimes be found on the library’s free app, Libby.
