Take Control of Noxious Weeds

Pierce, County Noxious Weed Control Authority urges landowners in the county to get an early start on the control of noxious weeds. State law requires the control of the twelve state noxious weeds: Canada thistle, musk thistle, plumeless thistle, leafy spurge, spotted knapweed, diffuse knapweed, purple loosestrife, saltcedar, Japanese knotweed, giant knotweed, phragmites and sericea lespedeza. Many counties in Nebraska also have county added noxious weeds, such as scotch thistle, bull thistle, houndstongue, and field  bindweed.

According to the Nebraska Noxious Weed Control Act, “it is the duty of each person who owns or controls land in the state to effectively control noxious weeds on such land”. County noxious weed control authorities have the responsibility to enforce the Act within their county. County weed superintendents are available to help landowners with questions about identification  or  recommendations  for control of weeds. Anyone who controls noxious weeds with herbicides should read the label of every product they use. Always read and follow the label directions, because the label is the law.

Noxious weeds pose a serious economic threat to agriculture in Nebraska. Statewide three to four million acres are infested with noxious weeds resulting in millions of dollars in control costs, lost production of forage and other crops. All citizens are urged to work together in an effort to control noxious weeds, whether they live in town or on agricultural land. Prevention, early detection and persistence are key ingredients to managing noxious weeds. For more information contact your local county weed control superintendent Steven Gathman, phone 402-992-8956, or email at [email protected].
