Northeast Power announces new solar, substation project

OSMOND – Northeast Power is moving forward with a significant infrastructure investment aimed at improving the reliability and affordability of electric service for customers in and around Osmond. The project includes the development of a new 2.5-megawatt (MW) solar facility, The Dr. David F. Johnson Jr. Solar Facility, and the construction of a new electric substation.

The solar site will be located approximately one mile east and one mile north of Osmond, while the substation will be positioned one mile directly east of town. These two components will be connected by an underground powerline, which has already been installed—marking a major early milestone in the project’s progress.

Construction on the new substation is set to begin soon, while the solar facility is currently in the final design stages. Northeast Power is preparing to release the component bid package for the solar project to interested vendors.

Once the new substation is operational, the existing substation located within the town of Osmond will be retired, and the generator will be relocated to the new site. The new site will be better equipped with advanced automation and remote monitoring capabilities to allow for quicker response times in the event of outages, improving overall system reliability and minimizing downtime for customers.

This project reflects Northeast Power’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the region’s electric infrastructure, ensuring more consistent service and helping to manage long-term costs for customers. By adding local energy resources and upgrading delivery systems, the utility aims to reduce system strain during peak times and provide dependable power for both rural and residential customers.

In addition, the Northeast Power Board has indicated its intent to make this a Low-Income (LMI) solar project. LMI projects are structured to bring the benefits of lower-cost energy to individuals and families who may be more financially vulnerable, helping reduce monthly energy bills and promote energy security.

“This investment is about building a stronger, more resilient electric system that works for everyone,” said representatives from Northeast Power. “With this project, we’re focused on keeping power reliable and rates reasonable for the people we serve.”

Once completed, the project will mark a major step forward in Northeast Power’s commitment to serving the region with dependable and costeffective electricity.
