For the first time, Fort Kearny State Recreation Area will open reservations early to accommodate visitors planning trips to witness the spring sandhill crane migration.
Starting Sept. 2 at 9 a.m. Central time, guests may reserve stays at Fort Kearny beginning March 1 for the park’s 38 reservable campsites. The remainder of the park will be available on a walk-in basis. Reservations may be made by calling 1-844-637-2757.
These early reservations are offered at the reduced nonpeak rate, as waterdependent amenities such as dump stations, water hookups, and modern restrooms may not yet be available due to seasonal freeze risks.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is extending the reservation window on these existing reservable sites for the convenience of those visiting south-central Nebraska to view the annual migration.
