Matthew Schindler carries the ball for one of four TDs in game against Homer

Vikings top the Homer Knights 54-14

(By Coach Jon Baue) WAUSA — On Friday night, Sept. 12, the Wausa-Osmond football team took on the Homer Knights. The Vikings chose to receive the kickoff and, on the opening drive which consisted of 12 plays, Matthew Schindler scored with an 8-yard run. Mac Carlson passed the ball to Kayton Anderson for the two-point conversion and the Vikings were up 8-0. On Homer's first drive, the Viking defense shut them down on fourth down and took over at our own 20 yard line. On our second play from scrimmage, Matthew Schindler ran the ball in from 20 yards out. Matt Carlson passed the ball to Lincoln Thorrell for the PAT score to make the score 16-0 early in the first quarter.

After a great kickoff from Gavin Nipp to pin the Knights deep starting at their five-yard line, the Vikings forced a three and out punt and took over on our own 39 yard line. A pass from Carlson to Thorell set us up at the 18 yard line to end the first quarter ahead 16 to 0.

The second quarter started with a 16-yard reverse to Kayton Anderson, putting us at the 10-yard line where two plays later, Carlson would score on a 7-yard keeper. The two-point attempt from Carlson to Thorell was good to put us up 24-0 with 10 minutes 51 seconds left in the second quarter.

A Cody Bloomquist interception on 3rd and long for the Knights gave us the ball back at our own 17 yard line. Penalties proved to be too much on this drive as we turned the ball over at the six yard line on downs.

A few short plays later, Kaleb Gardner came up with an interception of his own to give us the ball back at our own 25 yard line with 4:21 left in the second quarter. Big runs by Schindler put us at the 6 yard line, but a penalty brought us back to the 11.

Two plays later, Schindler carried the ball across the goal line untouched for the score. Schindler's run for the PAT was good to make the score 32-0 with 2 minutes 8 seconds left in the quarter.

The Knights started a drive with 2 minutes left and Matt Carlson had other plans. He intercepted the ball at their 36 yard line and returned it 54 yards for a Pick 6. The extra point toss was no good and we went into halftime leading 38 to 0.

The third quarter, the Vikings started by forcing Homer to punt. That set us up at their 36 yard line. An excellent run of 54 yards for a score by Schindler on our first play of the second half set the tone for the Vikings. The extra point run from Carlson was good and the score was then 46-0 Vikings.

A big quarterback sack by Caleb Vinson put the Knights in a long second down situation and the Viking defense held on to force a punt. On our next play from scrimmage, Mac Carlson found an opening on the right side and ran in a 73 yard score. Cody Bloomquist powered in the extra point attempt to make the score 54-0 Vikings with 6:31 remaining in the third quarter.

With about a minute and a half left in the third quarter, Homer scored to make it 54 to 8 to end the third quarter.

The Knights scored again with one minute 13 seconds left in the fourth quarter and the Vikes stopped the point after attempt, ending the scor- ing and the game with a final score of 54-14 to move to 3-0 on the season.

We were pleased with how the guys played tonight, but we need to get back to work to work on cleaning up our play. We had several penalties which cost us 105 yards tonight. If we can't find a way to clean that up, we will have a tough time when we start district play next week against Boyd County.
