An afternoon of music and fellowship

An afternoon of music and fellowship

OSMOND — Although it was not held at Poolside Park, the performance of A Touch of Brass brought an afternoon of beautiful music to those who attended on Sunday, Sept. 14. The day was breezy and pleasant, but the windy conditions and threat of rain caused the decision to move the event to United Methodist Church.

The group started off the afternoon with some show tunes and the Beatles song, “When I’m 64,” before playing some patriotic music and the medley of military songs.

Pastor Judy Carlson then introduced the song “Amazing Grace” by giving a history of how the song came to be written by John Newton, a former slave ship captain who converted to Christianity after a near-fatal shipwreck.

After the song, Pastor Carlson displayed an onion and an apple and spoke about not judging a person by their outside.

A Touch of Brass then played several other songs, including “How Great Thou Art,” “Jesus Loves Me” and “God Bless America.” For each of the songs they played that afternoon, band members would explain the story behind it.

The group ended their performance with the song, “A Closer Walk.” Members of the group include Randy Neuharth, on trombone; Michael Genslinger, trumpet; Kevin McLough, trumpet; Gary Reeves, horn, and Josh Calkin, tuba.

Mike Fink of the United Methodist Church Men, which sponsored the event, thanked the audience for attending.

Those in attendance were then treated to ice cream and cookies. A free will offering brought a donation of $335 which will go toward the Osmond Park Fund.
