(By Coach Jon Baue) WAUSA — The Vikings hosted Summerland for round one of the Class D1 playoffs on Thursday, Oct.
23, and received the opening kickoff.
The Bobcats held the Vikes on downs on our first drive after a failed fake punt attempt.
The Vikings then held the Bobcats to a turnover on downs but again were forced to punt; a Bobcat penalty gave the Vikes a first down. A few plays later, Mac Carlson connected with Matthew Schindler on a 32-yard scoring strike.
The PAT attempt from Carlson to Schindler was good to make the score 8-0 Vikings with 3 minutes 19 seconds left in the first quarter. The first quarter ended with the Vikings
leading 8-0.
In the second quarter, the Bobcats were dealt a couple doses of Matthew Schindler as he scored two more touchdowns on runs of 5 yards and a big run of 65 yards. Carlson scored one PAT on a run and the other failed.
The Vikings held strong on defense the second quarter and went into halftime leading 22-0.
The Bobcats started the third quarter receiving the kickoff and were moving slowly down the field until Carlson recovered a forced fumble to give the Vikings the ball back. Our ensuing drive ended shortly after with another Carlson to Schindler scoring strike.
PAT run by Schindler was good to make the score at the end of the third quarter Vikings 30 and bobcats 0.
The Viking defense held strong in the fourth quarter and the offense put up six more points on a Brady Kristensen run from 3 yards out. The PAT attempt failed. The Bobcats put six points of their own on the board with 2 minutes left in the game and the Vikes closed out the first round playoff with a win over Summerland, 36 to 6.
I was pleased to see the guys didn’t lose focus and came out fired up and aggressive. We will need to stay that way as we head to Bridgeport to take on the Bulldogs in round two of the D1 playoffs.
