Pierce County GOP to host petition drive town hall

PIERCE — The Pierce County GOP met on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at the Pierce Public Library. As part of a regular guest speaker series, the group welcomed John Steinkraus to speak about his role as a Pierce County commissioner.

Steinkraus, a Plainview native, represents much of the western portion of the county and has served just over a year. As commissioner, he and two others are tasked with taking care of the county’s budget, with a goal of avoiding raising the tax levy.

Each county office presents a budget to the Commission for approval. The Commission is also in charge of road works. In addition, Steinkraus serves on several boards as part of his role; among them are economic development, health and North Star.

Following the commissioner’s presentation, plans were discussed for an upcoming forum. The Pierce County Republican Party will host a citizen-led petition drive on Thursday, Dec. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pierce Fire Station.

A coalition of local organizations will join the Pierce GOP. They are We the People of Madison County, the Madison County Republican Party, the Stanton County Republican Party and Patriots United of Norfolk.

The purpose of this forum is educational; these groups may not endorse any specific petition but support citizens' rights to petition their government. The petitions and their representatives include: Choose Life Now, the Epic Option, a 50% Reduction in Taxable Property Valuation, a 3% cap on Annual Property Valuation Assessments, Winner-Take-All, Hand-counting of Election ballots and the APPLE plan for Education. Voters of all affiliations are welcome to attend, listen and consider signing any petition they support.

The next meeting of the Pierce County Republican Party will be Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. in the Pierce library.
