Secretary of State Bob Evnen answers DNC letter

LINCOLN – On Monday, Jan. 12, the Secretary of State received a letter from the Democratic National Committee threatening a lawsuit concerning voter registration list maintenance procedures used to keep our registration list accurate.

“This letter from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) is grandstanding. I read about the letter in the media before the DNC sent it to me. One must wonder whether the DNC cares about the accuracy of our voter registration list,” Secretary Evnen said.

In the letter, the DNC complains about a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) from the U.S. Department of Justice regarding those procedures. “We have not signed the Department of Justice MOU, we have no plans to do so, and we are not negotiating terms for the MOU,” Secretary Evnen said.

"My office is fully aware of the requirements of federal law for voter registration list maintenance, and we follow those requirements carefully. The Department of Justice is doing important work to ensure voter lists are maintained properly, and unless barred by a court order, I intend to send Nebraska’s voter registration list to the DOJ, as requested, on Feb. 12,” Evnen continued.

"During my time in office, I have always been proactive in securing our elections. From spearheading our voter ID laws, to ensuring the continued use of paper ballots, to expanding audits and opportunities for citizens to observe our elections, Nebraska has led the nation in election integrity,” said Secretary Evnen.

“We won’t be pressured by the DNC, Common Cause, or anyone else into compromising the integrity of our voter registration list maintenance process,” Evnen concluded.
