Lady Pirates at Invite
The Pirates traveled down to King’s Lanes in Norfolk on Saturday, Jan.
17, to take part in the Howells-Dodge invitational. The Pirates faced off in three games with different opponents each game to see if they could get in the bracket to follow.
The other teams competing in the invite were Howells-Dodge, Hartington-Newcastle, Humphrey-Lindsay, McCool Junction, North Bend Central, Bancroft-Rosalie and Omaha Christian Academy.
The Lady Pirates started off the morning with McCool Junction Lady Mustangs for the first game. Both teams must have not been that awake yet, because the scores were low. The Lady Pirates won the match 518-446 and took 7 out of 8 points.
Each of these matches counted to the overall record so this was the second win of the season for the Lady Pirates. Leading high scores were Natalee Gatz with a 139 and Nyome Harding with a 113. Both of them won their point as well, and Siris Stanton and Scarlet Torrey won their point as well.
The second game was against Bancroft-Rosalie Lady Panthers. The Lady Pirates had seen this team earlier in the year and the Lady Panthers won; they won Saturday’s match as well, 568-493, losing 7 of the 8 points. High scores were thrown by Lucea Miller with a 123 and Nyome Harding helping with a 120. The only point won was by Lucea Miller.
The third game was against Omaha Christian Academy Lady Guardians. The Lady Guardians started off hot and the Lady Pirates would have had to make a comeback from a 40-pin deficit half way through the game to
take the win, and they did, winning the match 504-480 and taking 6 of the
8 points. High scores were thrown by
Natalee Gatz with a 127 and Lucea Miller with a 124. Both of the ladies won their point and Scarlett Torrey won hers as well.
There was a short break in the action for the adding of the total pin count to put teams in the bracket. The two teams eliminated at this point were Hartington-Newcastle and Omaha Christian Academy.
The Pirates finished in fifth place and faced off with fourth place Bancroft-Rosalie Lady Panthers. Instead of full regular games, they start the best of 5 baker's games to move through the bracket and there is no second chance — you lose, you are done.
The Lady Panthers took the first two games 164-108 and 114-96. The Lady Pirates were force to win the last three to move on. They won the third game 100-76, but it was not in the cards, with the Lady Panthers winning the fourth game 147-110.
The Lady Pirates were out of the tournament. Howells-Dodge Lady Jaguars won the tournament over the Humphrey-Lindsay Lady Bulldogs 3-2. The Lady Pirates would finish the day 2-2 and over all 3-12 on the season.
