PIERCE - On Thursday, Jan. 29, at 3:32 p.m., the Pierce County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call of a single vehicle accident on Highway 98 approxi - mately 1.5 miles east of US Hwy 81 in rural Pierce County. Pierce Fire and Rescue and the Pierce County Sheriff's Office were dis - patched to the scene. The driver, Gerald Evert, 72, of Norfolk was pronounced deceased at the scene. Evert was traveling westbound on Highway 98 when his vehicle, a 2025 red Nissan Frontier pickup, left the roadway and entered into the north ditch. The vehicle continued westbound until striking a large standing tree. Seat belts were not in use and all airbags deployed. The accident was inves -
tigated by the Pierce County Sheriff's Office.
