Plains Sentinel launching as nonprofit Nebraska news outlet

LINCOLN – The Plains Sentinel announced its launch as a nonprofit, independent news site to provide free, non-partisan reporting and investigative stories on the most important issues facing our state. Their site will begin publishing news stories and investigative pieces this month as it seeks to restore integrity and balance in Nebraska’s media environment.

The organization is led by John Gage, who brings a decade of experience in media and Nebraska politics. The Plains Sentinel is focused on covering state and local government, political races and national politics, our state’s education system, the intersection of politics and money, human interest stories, and more.

The Plains Sentinel is founded with the belief that Nebraskans deserve the best standard of local journalism and that new and daring reporting is necessary so that Nebraskans can continue to be best informed about what is going on in their communities.

“Our mission is for The Plains Sentinel to be the most consequential news source in Lincoln and across the state,” said Gage, The Plain Sentinel’s Executive Editor. “Together, we are going to be bringing new and exciting scoops and stories that you won’t get from any other outlet in Nebraska.”

Gage is leading a group of freelance journalists from across Nebraska who will bring fresh ideas and report on-the-ground in their communities.

He has extensive experience and knowledge of Nebraska and national politics, having worked in campaigns, state government, and media relations for corporate and nonprofit clients. He most recently was the Nebraska state director for Americans for Prosperity.

Gage got his start in media working for the Washington Examiner where he covered Congress, the 2020 presidential race, Nebraska and breaking news.

The Plains Sentinel is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is funded exclusively through the contribution of readers and philanthropists. It is committed to bringing the Nebraska public the highest standard of reporting through a fact-based, non-partisan lens.

John J. Miller and Ryan Wolfe will be joining the board of The Plains Sentinel.

Miller is the director of the Dow Journalism Program at Hillsdale College and a columnist for Free Expression at The Wall Street Journal. He was a longtime writer and podcaster for National Review.

He is the founder and executive director of the Student Free Press Association, a non-profit group best known for its website, The College Fix. The Chronicle of Higher Education has called Miller “one of the best literary journalists in the country.”

Ryan Wolfe is the director of the Center for Excellence in Journalism at The Fund for American Studies. In his role, he works with young professionals to further their careers in public policy and journalism through a variety of fellowships, including the TFAS Public Policy Fellowship, Robert Novak Journalism Fellowship, and the Joseph Rago Memorial Fellowship for Excellence in Journalism.

Prior to joining TFAS, he worked at the Intercollegiate Studies Institute as the director of the collegiate network, where he managed a network of campus publications and placed students as summer interns and yearlong fellows at national media outlets.
