Gubbels in Northeast Midwinter Concert

The Northeast Community College Music Department presented its annual midwinter concert on Sunday, Feb. 15.

The Concert Choir, under the direction of Margaret Schultz, performed a varied program that included a spiritual, a Swedish folk song, a 19th century English poem, and a song written during Covid that emphasized light overcoming the darkness.

“The variety of the program offered an opportunity for students and attendees to musically transport themselves to different countries and cultures,” Shultz said. "There was a rich collection of ideas and reflections. For the students, it also presented some new vocabulary words like grist and gambrel.”

The College/Community band’s program highlighted a composition that is dedicated to soldiers who served in Korea and Vietnam. Other pieces on the program included a fanfare and classic march.

“I was really excited to have group perform Inchon,” said Band Director Kevin McLouth. “I heard it years ago and told myself I wanted to do that when I had a band good enough to perform it.”

Upcoming musical events on campus are the Northeast Jazz Festival on March 30 and 31, the Spring Concert on April 12, and the Tour Concert on April 10.

Among those who performed in the concert band on Feb. 15 was Keely Gubbels of Osmond on alto saxophone. Keely is a 2025 graduate of Osmond High School and the daughter of Jason and Amy Gubbels.
