Work being done on Niobrara SP Pond Aquatic Habitat Project

An Aquatic Habitat Project began May 26 at the Niobrara State Park Pond, causing some disruption in vehicle traffic on park roads during construction.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will improve the aquatic habitat conditions and angler access at the pond in the project, which should be completed this fall.

The project primarily focuses on sealing the pond, which historically has not held water sufficiently to support fishing and recreational activities. A well also will be installed to supplement runoff, an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant fishing pier will be built and in-lake habitat with cedar trees will be installed.

Funding is being provided by the Nebraska Game and Parks Aquatic Habitat Program, Capital Maintenance Funds, and a grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust. The Aquatic Habitat Program is maintained by the purchase of the Aquatic Habitat Stamp, which is included when each angler buys a fishing license.
