Vernon James "Skinner" Buol
Vernon passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026, at his residence in Osmond. Stonacek Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Vernon was born on Oct. 29, 1930, to Paul and Anna (nee Blunck) Buol. His birth took place on the farm about five miles southeast of Osmond. He was the last living sibling of nine which also included Dale, Dean, Bob, Don, Eileen, Delores, Judy, and Nancy. He grew up and attended rural school, known as 29 East, south of Osmond until the eighth grade when he began helping his father on the farm. Leo Barnett of Wausa also employed him. He had a pet rooster which he raised from a chick. Vernon joined the U.S. Navy in 1951 and served as a gunner in the Pacific waters off the Korean coast until 1955 when he was honorably discharged. He was 20 years old when he joined the Navy and said he couldn't buy a beer until he arrived in Hawaii. Vernon's favorite foods include anything his daughter Kim makes, steak, hamburgers, and any dessert. Vernon married Mary Elizabeth Hegstrom Engle on Aug. 26, 1961, at the Methodist church parsonage by Rev. C.E. Anderson, Mary's uncle. Mary was widowed at the age of 22 and had three children, Wesley Don, Winona (Noni) Lynn, and Jody Kay. Vernon adopted the three children, ages 7, 5 and 3 in Knox County Court at Center on March 2, 1962. Vernon and Mary were blessed with six more daughters, Kimberly Beth, Linda JoAnn, Cheryl Jane, Jacqueline Mary, Patricia Joan, and Beverly Dawn. In March of 1962, Vernon and Mary bought the family home at 4th and Maple Streets in Osmond. His final breath was taken in that very home. Vernon worked for Theisen Brothers Construction at the time. In 1970, Vernon began working for Biba Engineering of Geneva where he was employed until the company shut down Vernon's division in the fall of 1997. Vernon stayed in the construction business, returning to Theisen Brothers in the spring of 1998, where he worked until his retirement. Vernon enjoyed playing with his cats, an occasional craps game, and watching TV, keeping up on the news. He always watched Wheel of Fortune and would retire to bed as soon as it was over because he said, "there is nothing worth watching on TV after 7 p.m." Vernon was baptized and confirmed in the Presbyterian Church in Osmond and later professed his faith with the United Methodist Church in 1968. He is also a member of Osmond's American Legion.
Vernon was preceded in death by his wife Mary in 2015, his son Wesley Buol, his parents and his eight siblings.
Vernon is survived by eight daughters, Winona (Noni) and husband Rick Gubbels of Randolph, Jody and husband Duane Koehler of Pierce, Kim and husband George Bloom of Rapid City, S D, Linda and husband Bill Swallow of Osmond, Cheryl Van Fleet and special friend Rollie Hackett of Norfolk, Jackie Buol of Lincoln, Patty Buol of Lincoln, and Beverly Buol and special friend Larry Simmons of Sioux City, IA.
