James 'Jim' Bernard Burger passed away peacefully at his home on Oct. 31, 2025, surrounded by his wife and dogs.
Jim was born on March 11, 1949, during the blizzard of '49 to Joseph Burger and Stella (Tunink) Burger. Jim always liked telling the story of his birth during the blizzard of '49 where his dad had to take his mom with the horse and wagon across the snow and fence lines to get to the hospital. He was raised in Plainview, where he was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, where he served on the church council and was an EME. He graduated from Plainview High School in 1967, where he was an active member in FFA. Following his passion for service and community, he attended the Police Academy, graduating in 1973. Jim began his law enforcement career with the Osmond Police Department, proudly serving from 1970 to 1976. In 1976 he returned to the farm to take over operations after his father's death. Beyond his dedication to public service, Jim was known for his love of the outdoors and his deep appreciation for animals – especially the horses they raised and cared for over the years. They sold them all over the U.S. and Mexico. Jim started training and raising horses at the age of 16. His love for horses introduced him to his wife Jan, as she shared the same love of horses and animals. Jim was very proud of receiving the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award for the farm being in the family over 100 years. His grandfather Burger settled here in 1910. He and Jan were joined in marriage on Oct. 27, 1973, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Plainview. To this marriage were born two sons and one daughter; Scott James, Kenneth Joseph and Kristina Kay; nine grandchildren, James, Dedric, Logan, Kaitlyn, Kellen, Kylie, Aiden, Alivia and Gemma; and one great-grandson, Nolan Burger.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Janice 'Jan' Burger; his children, Scott Burger, Ken (Kelli) Burger, and Kristy (Ryan) Oberg; his cherished grandchildren, James (Bianca) Burger, Dedric (Ahnika O'Hare) Burger, Logan Burger, Kaitlyn Oberg, Kellen Burger, Kylie Burger, Aiden Oberg, Alivia Oberg, and Gemma Burger; great-grandson, Nolan Burger; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Stella Burger; his brother, Gerald Bodfield; his sis ters, Alice Zoes and Bertha Schultz; grandparents, Joseph Sr. and Minnie Burger and Bernard and Clara Tunink; and other friends and relatives.
He will be remembered for his dedication to family, his lifelong work ethic, and his love for the simple beauty of rural life. His calm strength, steady presence and love for his family were felt by all who knew him.
Memorials can be made in care of the family and left at the church or sent to Jan Burger, 86571 540 Ave., Plainview, NE 68769.
