CENTER – The 2024 primary election is approaching fast. This is the time for eligible Knox County residents to register to vote as well as update their voter registration if they wish to change political party affiliation, have changed their name or have changed any part of their address.
As Knox County is a by-mail-only county, ballots for the May 14 primary election will be mailed to registered voters on April 24, so it is recommended that people register or update their voter registration now.
Application forms are available at the Knox County Clerk’s Office in Center or at the Bloomfield City Clerk’s Office, Creighton City Clerk’s Office, Crofton City Clerk’s Office, Niobrara Village Clerk’s Office, Pinnacle Bank in Verdigre, Santee Village Clerk’s Office and Wausa Village Clerk’s Office.
People may register through the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles when renewing their driver’s licenses or when updating a valid driver’s license, such as moving from one county to another or change of name or address.
A popular method of registering to vote is by doing so online. The basic process for the state’s online registration system allows an applicant with a Nebraska driver’s license or state identification card to provide voter registration information through a web portal.
More than 95 percent of new Knox County registrations and updated registrations are done online.
The website address to register online is ne.gov/go/NEreg2vote.
Voter registration forms also may be downloaded online at sos. nebraska.gov/sites/sos.nebraska. gov/files/doc/elections/vr-fillable. pdf. The form is fillable online, but must be printed, signed and mailed or delivered to the Knox County Clerk’s Office.
If a voter is submitting the application form by mail and he or she is registering in Nebraska for the first time, one of the following documents must accompany the completed registration form: a current and valid photo identification, or, a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government documentation that verifies the name and residence address as shown on the application.
Providing the above identification documentation along with the mail-in registration at the time the person registers will enable them to avoid identification requirements when voting in elections.
The deadlines to register to vote are April 29 if registering online, through the DMV or other agencies, through a satellite office or through the mail (voter registration forms must be postmarked no later than April 29), or May 3 at 6 p.m. if registering in person.
The Knox County Clerk’s Office will be open until 6 p.m., May 3.
If people have any questions, they may call Knox County Clerk Joann Fischer at 402-288-5604 or email [email protected].
