WAUSA – The Wausa varsity golf team had a player record a top-20 finish at a familiar course on April 20.
Junior Jake Munter shot a score of 93 for the Vikings at the 2024 Osmond Invitational, which was held at Rolling Hills Country Club west of Wausa, and placed 20th. He tied junior Hunter Tubbs of Stuart, who placed 19th.
“I did pretty well,” Munter said. “Some shots were off. It’s mostly my putting and my seven-, eight-, nine-irons. My short game hasn’t been that good. I feel like I could get that a little bit better and shave some strokes off of that.”
Wausa head coach Chris Haberer noted he was “really proud” of Munter and his performance at Rolling Hills.
“He was playing awesome on the front nine until the last two holes, with a double bogey and triple bogey to finish the front, but responded very well in the conditions,” Haberer said, noting the cool spring weather.
Freshman Lincoln Thorell shot a 101 for 36th place, junior Brady Bloomquist shot a 102 for 39th place, junior Olivia Barta shot a 105 for 43rd place and sophomore Kayton Anderson shot a 121 for 55th place.
As a team, the Vikings placed eighth out of 13 squads with a score of 401. Ponca won the tournament with a 323, followed by Cedar Catholic junior varsity, 355; Summerland, 359; Hartington-Newcastle, 379; Randolph, 387; Bloomfield, 391; and Plainview, 398.
Wausa competed on April 23 at the Cedar Catholic/Hartington- Newcastle Invitational in Hartington. The Vikings are set to compete on April 27 at the Pierce Invitational, on April 29 at the Lewis and Clark Conference Golf Meet in Randolph and on May 1 at the Niobrara/Verdigre Invitational in Niobrara.
“I’m just lookaing to have fun, have a good time” with his fellow golfers for the rest of the season, Munter said, adding he has a goal of qualifying for the state tournament this year.
