1944: The month of May starts off with wet weather

May 4, 1939

WAUSA — In Knox County, with Mrs. F. O. Lundberg as county chairman and Mrs. C. P. Larson as local chairman, considerable improvement has been made on a number of school grounds. Dora Rock, our county superintendent has given the movement as much cooperation as she has been able as has our other county agent, Mr. G. W. Erickson. All of the rural schools in the county, 145 in number, were contacted. Shelterbelt planting made by the federal government was secured for two school grounds, one in Bloomfield and one in Creighton.

WAUSA — Gerald Hultman and Marvin Swanson drove to Laurel, Nebraska Tuesday on business. Coming home they met a car coming around a bend and in trying to evade the oncoming car, his own went over the embankment, turning over several times demolishing it very badly, having to have it towed back to Wausa. Mr. Hultman received a few minor scratches, while Mr. Swanson escaped without a scratch.

WAUSA — Talk about weather, we have had most any kind during the past few days. Lots of rain fell during the latter part of April, but as Mr. Creutz, of the Creutz Drug Store, did not get his rain gauge in work ing condition until the last week or so of April we can not give the total rainfall during the month. On April 22nd and 23rd there was a total of 1.20 inches of precipitation and on the 29th and 30th .42. This month there has been a total of 2.75 from Tuesday morning until Wednesday evening. Last night the temperature dropped considerable, hitting below thirty this morning, Thursday, with quite a heavy freeze. Sun came out bright and clear in the early morning but as this is written clouds are again appearing and we may yet have more rain. This continuous wet weather is holding back all kinds of farm work, some have not even completed seeding their small grain, and plowing for corn has been out of the question thus far. A busy season is around the corner. Since the above was written we have had more rain turning to snow.

WAUSA — “In Flanders fields the poppies blow...” — so went the immortal words of Col. John McCrae’s poem. Little did he realize when he penned those lines that some day the very poppies of which he wrote would be the true symbol of all those who gave their lives in our nation’s wars. But that is the case today. Annually, the Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsors the Buddy Poppy Sale in the Wausa area to raise moon for needy and disabled veterans. This is their way of “Honoring the dead by helping the Living.” You, too, can pay your respects on May 3 when the Buddy Poppies will be on sale in this community. Do your part - buy a Buddy Poppy and wear it proudly.

WAUSA — The 1989 Senior Class of Wausa High School was honored by the Junior Class Friday, April 28, at the banquet and prom held at the Community Auditorium. “An Evening on the Ritz” was the theme for this spring’s social event. The colors were black and white with red and silver accents. The circus tent-type ceiling was made of black and blue streamers. Large potted palms and red street lights were set around the floor. Two large black and white murals and white streamers adorned the black polywrap sides.

WAUSA — Class of 1994 merits our praise by Robert W. Rogers, Wausa School Superintendent Congratulations and best wishes to our graduating seniors. As I reflect over the past year I am very appreciative of the contributions that they have made to our school academically, athletically and artistically. They have surely provided the positive, and I stress positive, leadership that is needed to make things work in school. They have achieved highly in the academic field, maintaining fine grades and have done well in our academic competitions. They have provided excellent leadership in athletics, in music speech and drama that resulted this year in a winning football season,an excellent and strong boys basketball season a trip to the State Girls Basketball Tournament.

An outstanding year, including a runner-up trophy in speech and drama, a track season that is bringing home so many trophies and medals that we don’t have room for then and a music season that culminated with a district contest effort of 17 superior and 7 excellent ratings, plus four superior plaques. Make no mistake, all of Wausa’ s students have done a extraordinary job this year and I know that the whole community joins me in congratulating them on a job well done and wishing our graduates the very best as their future unfolds for them.
