NIOBRARA – Junior Jake Munter and the Wausa varsity golf team as a whole recorded their best showings so far of the 2024 season on May 1.

Munter shot a score of 88 for a 12th-place finish at the Niobrara/Verdigre Invitational, Niobrara. He tied Chambers/Wheeler Central freshman Jasper Metschke, who placed 11th. Summerland junior Michael Koenig won the tournament by shooting a 75.

“I did pretty good,” Munter said. “Everything kind of came together.” The Vikings shot a score of 392 and placed fifth out of 11 teams, finishing behind Summerland, 339; host Niobrara/Verdigre and Chambers/Wheeler Central, tied at 374; and rival Bloomfield, 379.

“We could do better if we just clean up some easy strokes, like putting or chipping,” Munter said. “We could all get better on that.”

Wausa junior Brady Bloomquist shot a 99, sophomore Kayton Anderson shot a 101, freshman Lincoln Thorell shot a 104 and junior Olivia Barta shot a 114.

“So glad we were able to have some more kids play,” Vikings head coach Chris Haberer said. “This really helps on (the) years to come. Very proud of the kids’ performance, with Jake playing his best round of the year and the team shooting their best total score. Can’t wait for the upcoming events.”

Wausa competed on May 7 at the rescheduled Randolph Invitational and were set to play on May 8 at the Ponca Invitational. The Vikings are scheduled to compete on May 13 at the District D-2 Golf Meet, Hartington.

“We’ve just been improving at practice,” Haberer said. “Everything’s kind of coming together. They’re figuring out their swings.

“If we can get everybody on the same page for one meet, we should have a really good showing at districts,” he said.

“Everybody’s game is coming around,” he said. “Hopefully, we can just tie it altogether and we can all have one good day at once.”
