WAUSA — Loren Lundberg met with a painful accident Wednesday evening while changing a tire on a car. Having the car jacked up and when he was about to place the tire on the wheel the jack slipped and his hand was caught between the fender of the car and the tire, getting a bad gash on the back of his hand. He was immediately brought to the doctor and the injured member properly dressed and bandaged. No bones were broken and Loren will be “good as new” in a short time.

WAUSA — Ebba Rosen, while at work at the Commercial Hotel met with an accident on Thursday of last week. She was standing on a chair hanging a curtain and in some way fell off the chair with the result thatshe fractured two ribs. She has been confined to her bed but is getting along as nicely as can be expected.

WAUSA — Graduation exercises for twenty-four seniors and fifteen eighth graders were held Wednesday evening, May 19th in the Community Auditorium at Wausa. R. F. Patterson, Dean of the College of Business of the University of South Dakota was the commencement speaker and gave an interesting address on the topic, “A Graduation Final Exam.” Diplomas were presented to the senior and eighth grade graduates by J. Arnold Anderson, President of the Board of Education. Honors for the top ranking student scholastically and valedictorian of this year’s senior class went to Malvern Seagren. Salutatorian honors for the second highest ranking student went to Marlyn Carlson.

WAUSA — Rain Monday night was heavy enough to cause washing in fields in this area. Some rain fell Monday afternoon and that evening the showers became heavy ending with light rain Tuesday morning. The measurement on the Creutz rain gauge was 1.40 inches. A small amount of hail fell in the afternoon. Wind Friday was reported in Norfolk gusting to 61 miles per hour and an above ground funnel was sighted east of Hartington. Temperatures were cool this week but the weather man promises a warming trend Thursday.

WAUSA — The Wausa High School Baccalaureate services for the 45 seniors will be held in the community auditorium on Sunday evening, May 18th. The Reverend David Bones of the Methodist Church of Wausa will give the glass sermon with services to begin at 8 p.m. On Wednesday evening, May 21, commencement exercise for the class will be held in the community auditorium. Royal Henline, from the State Department of Education, will give the commencement address. The exercises will begin promptly at 8 p.m. The programs for both events will be found in this week’s issue of the Gazette.

WAUSA — The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Roy Carlson, Post 5824 at their May meeting finalized plans for tending of the memorial park flower bed at the auditorium. Monday, May 15, Post and Auxiliary members prepared the ground and planted 250 red and white petunias. The Post and Auxiliary purchase the flowers and continue to weed and water during the summer months. People helping to prepare the ground and plant were Virgil and Gladys Lind, Merlyn and Laura Lind, Kathryn Thierolf, Verlyn Vanness, Floyd and Delores Thorell.

WAUSA — Thursday, May 12, the Wausa Viking track teams competed in the C-7 District track meet at Plainview High School. The Wausa boys scored 92 points to capture the silver team title as Atkinson West Holt won the meet with 114 points. Team scoring: Atkinson West Holt 114; Wausa 92; Crofton 67; Neligh 56, Spencer-Naper 55.5; Plainview 38; Rock County 27; Osmond 26; Verdigre 18.5; Bloomfield 13; Orchard 11; Creighton 8.5. The Lady Vikings scored 70 points to finish in the bronze position but the first three finishers were only spread out by 10 points. Atkinson West 80; Crofton 78; Wausa 70; Bloomfield 45; Neligh 44; Creighton 44; Plainview 40; Verdigre 37; Rock County 15.5; Osmond 15; Spencer-Naper 10; Orchard 8. Our boys scored 41 points in the field events and 51 points on the track. Wausa won three events and finished second in three events for the automatic qualification for the State Track Meet. The Wausa girls scored 22 in the field events and 48 on the track to capture third place. The Lady Vikings placed first in four events and finished second in two events for the automatic State qualifications.

WAUSA — Rev. Sharon Stevens, a United Methodist Pastor, is leaving Wausa after serving in this area for the past 10 years. Her last service will be June 20. She moved to Wausa in 1994 to pastor the Wausa and Magnet churches. When the Magnet church closed after she had been here four years she began pastoring the Wausa, McLean and Randolph churches. In 2002 the McLean church also closed and since then she has served just Randolph and Wausa.
