Wausa 14/16s softball team defeats Creighton to open 2024 season

WAUSA – The Wausa 14/16s softball team opened its 2024 season with a 7-6 win over Creighton on May 15.

WAUSA – The Wausa 14/16s softball team opened its 2024 season with a 7-6 win over Creighton on May 15.

Wausa’s Izzy Seagren got the start on the mound and threw the whole game for her team. She recorded one strikeout, while only walking three.

“We trust Izzy out there,” Wausa head coach Shelbey West said. “She’s our youngest girl, but she throws a lot of strikes and pitches to contact, which is ideal for us. We really like to lean on our defense for both age groups, and Izzy does a great job of filling up the zone and getting us ground balls.”

Creighton scored a run in the first inning to take the early lead in what would be a back-and-forth game. Wausa responded by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first frame off of hits by Aleah James and Dalee Sazama.

Creighton scored two more runs to tie the game in the top of the third frame off of a pair of singles and a few stolen bags.

Wausa plated its fourth run in the bottom of the fourth inning off of a base hit by Avery Stevens, and a passed ball, scoring Ainsley Dawson from third base.

After tying the game up in the final inning, Kennedy Gillilan scored on a passed ball from third base to win the game for Wausa.

“Overall, I was pleased with how well our younger group played,” West said. “Izzy competed all game long and really gave us a chance from the first pitch. The one thing you can’t afford is to come out and walk a bunch of batters. Free bases are just killers in close games like this and Izzy did a great job of making Creighton earn everything.

“We got out-hit today, but we had a lot of girls get on base, whether it was by walks or getting hit by a pitch, which was great to see,” she said. “The girls were really aggressive on the bases and we were able to put a lot of pressure on Creighton with our speed, which is a strong suit of this group. Our defense was lights out and that is something that we will lean on the rest of the summer. I’m excited to see how much this group grows over the next couple of months.”

As for stats from the game, Creighton out-hit Wausa 11 to 6. Wausa players who recorded a hit were Avery Stevens, 1; Tierney Alexander, 2; Aleah James, 1; Dalee Sazama, 1; and Lexi Wright, 1.
