1944: Selective Service picks Knox County area
May 25, 1939
WAUSA — June 10th is the opening date of the Boys’ State, the second annual such gathering held at the state agricultural college. Besides Blaine Hammond of Wausa there will be three other Knox County youths to make up the 279 young Cornhusker state boys who will make up the citizen of the Cornhusker Boys’ State. They are Edward Jirecek Jr., of Verdigre, Evan Lutt and Dale S. Soulek, of Niobrara, and Berthol Freeman of Creighton. Two counties and six cities will make up the boys state which opens on June 10 at the agricultural college in the Capitol city, for practice in government. Biff Jones of the University of Nebraska will be in charge, as he was at the initial camp a year ago.

WAUSA — The June calls for Selective Service in Knox County will be filled by the following men: For the Navy: Glenn Wilbert Lamprecht, Bloomfield and Marvin Alfred Swanson, Wausa; heretofore inducted. Ralph Edwin Peterson, Wausa; Lee Donald Baker, Ernest A. Cook, Jr., Donald Clarence True, Lyle LeRoy Newton, all Bloomfield; Joe A. Prochaska, Winnetoon; and Waymond Duane Finke, Creighton; transferred from Contra Costa County, Richmond California.
For the Army: Howard Issac West, Roy Raymond McGee, Niobrara; Gerald Vance Johns, George Thomas Hunt, Elwin Henry Canaday, Donald Lawrence Jordan, all Bloomfield; Joseph Francis Ryan, Dennis A. Ebel, Creighton; Lloyd James Scott, Verdel; Irvin Clifford Sedivy, Robert Donald Prokop, Verdigre; Alvin Joe Skalichy, Martin Ellis Quast, Venus; James Louis Powell, Center; and Eldon Gale Ellingson, Niobrara, transferred from Erie County, Buffalo, N.Y. to be inducted shortly after the middle of June.

WAUSA — The chairman of the Village Board of Trustees, submitted a Proclamation requesting that all business houses be closed on Decoration Day, Tuesday, May 30th, all day.

WAUSA — Further collections from Wausa merchants the past week have assured the continuation of the free Saturday night shows through- out the summer months. The fine attendance and interest shown by persons in this community is very gratifying to the sponsors. A revised list of those who bring these free Saturday night movies will be found in the advertisement given on page two of this issue. We are happy to add to the list the names of Dr. B. F. Johnson, Paul Swanson, Rueben Anderson and Anthon Bloomquist. We know you will be pleased to include them in your appreciation of this friendly gesture.

WAUSA — In an afternoon game at Wausa the Swedes defeated the Creighton Bulldogs 8 to 3. Singles by Lammers, Gunderson and Anderson and Swanson’s triple netted Wausa four runs in the first inning. Wausa added three runs in the second inning on an error, a fielders choice that missed fire on a double play attempt and singles by Gunderson and Ronnie Johnson; and added their final tally in the 7th on Gunderson’s third single and Miller’s double.

WAUSA — John Deere Company has filed two suits in the District Court of Knox County in connection with the $283,330.31 judgment against Leonard C. Kuhl in favor of John Deere Company entered April 20th. In one suit, in which Leonard C. Kuhl, Helen R. Kuhl, Norman E. Kuhl, and Mrs. Norman E. Kuhl are defendants, the petition contains three causes of action in which it is alleged that certain conveyances made by Leonard C. Kuhl were made without consideration and with intent to hinder, delay, and defraud his creditors, including John Deere Company, and asks that the conveyances be declared void and the property be sold and the proceeds applied upon the judgment of John Deere Company against Leonard C. Kuhl.

WAUSA — The Wausa Boy Scouts gathered 146 pounds of clothing and soap which they mailed in thirteen packages to Sgt. Robert Anderson in Vietnam. Sgt. Anderson will distribute the articles to needy Vietnamese civilians who assist in locating and destroying booby-traps. The boys gathered the clothing and organizations and individuals contributed money for postage. Mrs. Calvert Anderson, mother of the sergeant, assisted with packing the articles. There are twelve members in the troop of which Richard Schultz is leader. The postage cost $46.30 with $26.00 remaining in the fund. It has been suggested that soap or clothing be purchased but a decision will be made after consulting Sgt. Anderson for an opinion from him.

WAUSA — Friday and Saturday, May 19-20 the 1989 State Track and Field Championship got under way in Omaha. Wausa’s only entry in the state meet was senior Lance Lundberg. Lance competed in the shot put on Friday and threw the discus on Saturday. In the shot put, Lance had a toss of 52’ 1 1/2” in the preliminary to lead the group. However, in the finals, Don Fox of North Loup Scotia made a toss of 52’ 7 1/12” to win the event with Lundberg plac ing second.

WAUSA — The Thabor Lutheran Church will be celebrating the 100th birthday of the present church building on May 30. The first church structure was built northwest of the future town of Wausa.
