WAUSA – People are invited to join the Lied Lincoln Township Library’s summer reading program and attend the fun events that are being planned.

Children in preschool through eighth grade, teenagers and adults are invited to participate in the program. This summer’s theme is “Adventure Begins at Your Library.” The events are free and open to people of all abilities.

The program will require everyone to read – or be read to – all summer long and keep track of their reading minutes/pages. The goal is to keep children’s minds active so they enter school in the fall ready to learn and prepared to succeed.

The summer reading challenge for children started on May 20 and will end on July 25. Children are supposed to read – or be read to – at least 100 minutes per week. That is only about 15 minutes per day.

For every week the children reach the 100- or 250-minute goal, they can visit Wausa’s public library and get a prize. They can come on Thursdays for the prizes.

On the last day of the program, the library will have a magician and an awards ceremony celebrating the summer of reading, and bigger prizes will be given out. The child with the most minutes read also will get a prize.

The library has Nebraska Extension in Knox County visiting from 2-3 p.m. July 15 and 16.

Summer Reading Week will be July 22-26 this year and feature many events at the library.

Bruce Arant, Omaha, is the award-winning author of the children’s book “Simpson’s Sheep Won’t Go To Sleep!” He is set to be at the library at 10 a.m. July 22. Arant, who also is an illustrator, will give a workshop for kids on writing and illustrating books.

Tammi Thiem, the executive director of the Omaha-based Three Rivers Library System, will give a presentation at 10 a.m. July 23 featuring a breakout box challenge.

On July 24 and 25, Peter Talley, a Hartington man who runs the Wausa Board Game Club, and library director Wendy Ketelsen will have activities featuring paper airplanes, gaming and crafts.

The library will have Lincoln-based magician Adam White visiting at 10 a.m. July 26 for the program’s endof- summer celebration. Children’s parents and siblings are invited to attend as well.

Registration forms as well as food allergy and photo release forms are available at the library and must be signed for kids to participate in library events.
