WAUSA – The Wausa Vikings’ 14/16s softball team recently had an up-and-down week of 2024 game results.
Wausa lost to the Verdigre 16s by a score of 7-6 on May 28 and then came back with a strong performance, beating the Randolph 16s 17-5 on May 29. The next day, on May 30, Wausa lost 10-6 to the Hartington 16s.
Reagan and Kennedy Gillilan, along with Avery Stevens, handled a majority of Wausa’s pitching this past week.
“I thought all of our girls threw extremely well this week,” Wausa head coach Shelbey West said. “Avery has put together three really good performances for us on the mound this year and you can see her confidence growing each game.
“Reagan and Kennedy both threw well in their two starts as well,” she said. “They threw a lot of strikes and gave us a great chance to win both games. We just didn’t give them enough run support when we were at the plate and that is on our offense, not our pitchers.”
West noted Wausa prides itself on its offense this year. “I feel like we need to get back to that aggressive mindset at the plate and on the bases,” West said. “It helps your pitchers out immensely when we are able to score six-plus runs.
“But they’re still growing as a team and we know that they will continue to improve at the plate,” she said. “If our pitchers continue to throw strikes the way they have, we will be tough to beat as the season goes on.”
Wausa was 3-3 overall on the season going into a home contest against the Crofton 16s on June 4 and will be on the road to play the Ponca 16s on June 6.
