Knox County Sheriff’s Office investigates stabbing incident near Verdigre

CENTER – The Knox County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at about 11:20 p.m., June 6, concerning a stabbing incident that occurred northeast of Verdigre.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the call along with Verdigre Volunteer Fire and Rescue and found Jon Lucas, 33, rural Creighton, at the scene with numerous stab wounds.

Lucas was treated at the scene by Verdigre Rescue and transported to Avera Creighton Hospital, where he was treated in the emergency room and then life-flighted to Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D.

The investigation revealed Lucas had been assaulted by at least two individuals. Kaden Spencer, 20, whose last known address was in Creighton, was arrested and booked into the Knox County Jail in Center on a charge of first-degree assault after an investigation by the sheriff’s office. Possible charges are pending against two other individuals.

The Bloomfield and Creighton Police Departments assisted the sheriff’s office during the investigation.

The sheriff’s office responded June 5 to a one-vehicle crash north of 895th Road on Highway 121, about five miles north of Crofton.

A black BMW sedan, driven by Reagan Johnson, Crofton, went through the fence line on the east side of Highway 121, causing disabling damage to the vehicle.

Johnson was taken to Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, S.D., by a private citizen and was treated for suspected injuries.

The sheriff’s office received a report at about 7 p.m., June 8, from John Sage, Crofton, about his gray 2005 Ford Freestar being stolen from the trailer court at 1602 W. Second St. in Crofton.

Sage believed the van was stolen at some point after 9 a.m. that day. The sheriff’s office is following up on investigative leads, including surveillance in the area.

The vehicle was entered as stolen into a nationwide database. Anyone with information on this incident may contact the sheriff’s office at 402-288-4261.
