1954: Royal Swanson replaces Earl Petersen as fire chief

Jan. 30, 1919

WAUSA — The snow blockade on the Bloomfield branch of the C. St. P. M. & O. was not broken until Friday night, and the first mail train since Tuesday night came in Saturday afternoon. The train brought a good big dry load of mail sacks, and the post office force was kept busy all afternoon and evening getting the supply distributed. After being isolated for almost a week it proved a decided novelty to get news once more from the outside world, and the post office lobby was crowded all afternoon with patrons of the office waiting to get their mail. The rural carriers did not venture out on their routes at all Saturday but were on duty at the post office to distribute the mail for their respective routes as it was received. People from the rural districts were as anxious as the town people for their daily and weekly papers, and rural routes called at the post office for their mail during the afternoon and evening. The carriers informed us that more than half of the big accumulation of mail was handed out.

Scarcely had the blockade occasioned by the big snow storm of last week been raised and Wausa once more placed in commu- nication with the outside world, when old Boras again swept over this section of the country in raging fury demolishing train service and cutting offcommunications. The third big blizzard of the late series broke loose here shortly before midnight Saturday, when the wind swung around to the northwest and was soon blowing a regular hurricane. Considerable snow fell, and the storm raged with unabated fury all Saturday night and all Sunday. While in many respects as bad as the storm of last Wednesday, Sunday’s blizzard was not accompanied by such intense cold, the mercury never dropping much below the zero mark. No one, however, seemed inclined to venture out Sunday morning, and services were called off at all the local churches on account of the storm.

WAUSA — George E. Anderson, proprietor of the Golden Rule Store, left Monday for an extended vacation trip. He headed for Las Cruces, New Mexico, where his oldest son, Marlow, is one of the professors in the state university. But there is a tale to this story. Mr. Anderson has not taken a vacation for a number of years, so his son, Eilert, in Chicago, concluded that it was about time for his father to take a little vacation trip and sent him a cash Christmas gift with a strong string tied to it that the money was to be spent only for a vacation, and the sooner, the better. Mr. Anderson had quite a time deciding to break away from his business here, but the money in his pocket, to be spent in no other way, finally brought the determining factor. Just how long Mr. Anderson will remain, or if concluding to go on to the west coast, he left undecided at the time of leaving here.

WAUSA — Snowfall over this past week came as a surprise for many in the region. Having to shovel sidewalks and drives, scoop out feedbunks and check automatic livestock waterer’s and tasks area farmers haven’t had to deal with much until recently. Participants included Guy Anderson, Chris Carlson, Cashe Carlson, Tom Suhr, Doyle Folck, Dave Cunningham, Dillon Cunningham and Dan Gansebom. Also helping out; Scott and Skyles Kinkaid, Jessica Anderson, Terry Clausen, Bahr Farms, Dakota Cunningham, Derek Cunningham and Dyson Cunningham, Linda Cunningham, Dean Cunningham, Joel Suhr, Tim Suhr, Audie and Same Elsberry, and Steve Claussen.
