Nebraska cattle on feed up 2%
LINCOLN – Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 2.32 million cattle on feed on September 1, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. This inventory was up 2% from last year.

Chicken and egg numbers are up
LINCOLN – All layers in Nebraska during August 2024 totaled 8.63 million, up from 7.89 million the previous year, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

USDA releases crop production report
LINCOLN – Based on Sept. 1 conditions, Nebraska’s 2024 corn crop is forecast at 1.89 billion bushels, up 9% from last year’s production, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. This would be a new record high production if realized. Area harvested for grain, at 9.70 million acres, is up 2% from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 195 bushels per acre, up 13 bushels from last year. This would be a new record high yield if realized.

(Pierce County Weed Control) Fall is an excellent time to control noxious weeds. Nebraska’s noxious are translocating nutrients to their root systems during the cool autumn months to survive the winter and get a good start next year. These weeds include Canada thistle, musk thistle, plumeless thistle, leafy spurge, spotted knapweed, diffuse knapweed, purple loosestrife, saltcedar, Japanese knotweed, giant knotweed, phragmites and sericea lespedeza.
